DrBBQ’s Red Eye Old-Fashioned

DrBBQ’s Red Eye Old Fashioned

By Ray Lampe, Dr. BBQ

The classic Old-Fashioned gets a great new twist with the added taste of Dizzy Pig’s coffee-infused seasoning. The simple syrup is best made a couple days ahead and kept in the refrigerator. I like to keep it in a squeeze bottle so it’s ready to go. I’ve used bourbon in this drink, but rye would be a great substitution. Be sure to get the fancy Italian cherries. They really make a difference.

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

Cocktail

  • 3 drops bitters, I used Angostura bitters
  • 1 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz of bourbon or rye whiskey
  • One slice of orange, cut in half
  • One Italian cocktail cherry

Directions

Simple Syrup

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar and Dizzy Pig Red Eye Express Seasoning Blend
  2. Place the pan over medium heat
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer, mixing often
  4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temp
  5. Pour into a squeeze bottle or small pitcher and refrigerate until needed
  6. Be sure to shake or stir before using

Cocktail

  1. Add the bitters to a rocks glass
  2. Add the simple syrup
  3. Squeeze the juice of ½ slice of orange into the glass, and discard the squeezed orange
  4. Add a large ice cube or a handful of regular cubes
  5. Add the bourbon and stir rapidly with a bar spoon to chill
  6. Wrap the remaining half slice of orange around the cherry and secure with a toothpick
  7. Add to the glass and serve immediately
