We could have stayed close to home and competed a half hour from home, but decided, instead, to kick the season off in Kannapolis, NC. We’d heard good things about Jiggy with the Piggy and it turned out to be a top-notch contest. The organizers really went above and beyond and put on a great event that really took care the BBQ teams. From power to ice to the awesome venue to the great weather.
Dizzy Pig has actually had some fine results competing in North Carolina, but then again, we’ve had our difficulties as well! Half of the contests we’ve done in NC we’ve been in the top 5, and the other half of the time we’ve placed way down in the middle of the pack. This weekend was one where the judges did not write down high enough numbers for our turn-ins. 15th in chicken out of 74 teams is not bad at all, but that was our best call of the day. Last year, we cooked in a contest where Ribs were are worst category, but we got our best score in Ribs. This weekend, we felt ribs were our best turn in, but was our lowest placement. Imagine the frustration!
As usual, seeing your friends win is the next best thing to winning yourself and my old friend Tommy Houston and his team Checkered Pig took home the ultimate prize for the second time in as many years! A big congrats to Redneck Scientific for coming in second by a nose. Kudos to everyone who got calls, and a shout out to all those involved in putting on a fine event.
