Onto the Open, and with a field of over 550 teams, Dizzy Pig put together 4 quality turn-in boxes, with just a few minor issues arising from the demands of back-to-back contest. Once again, no calls at awards time, but the team kept up the consistency in the 4 categories, and pretty well matched scores from the previous day’s efforts. All in all, with a 93rd place finish, the team could take pride in being in the top 17% of the field in the Open.
As always, one of the parts of the Royal that makes the long journey there all worthwhile is the people you meet, old friends and new, and the 2014 edition of the ‘World Series of Barbecue’ was no exception.
Highlights for the team included the opportunity to see friend, Ray ‘DRBBQ’ Lampe get inducted into the BBQ Hall of Fame by Guy Fieri and to witness two longtime friends, Smokin Hoggz BBQ and Tuffy Stone’s Cool Smoke team take top honors at the Invite and the Open respectively. Two classy teams, and friends that we couldn’t be happier to see wearing the robe and crown on stage at awards time! While only the 2nd time in 7 trips to the Royal without hearing their name called, the Dizzy Pig team put in a great effort with a crew working together for the first time, and, of course, a fantastic time was had by all.
Next up: The Jack, and an opportunity to improve on the scores from the American Royal.
