Grand Champion!

The team had such a great time last year that we applied to cook the Harpoon BBQ Championships of New England once again! Fortunately, Dizzy Pig was accepted into this special contest where there are always more teams applying than are accepted. As one of the few contests where teams are expected to vend, it is always a ton of work to prepare for. It’s also a great reason to have plenty of help around, and we had the dream team hard at work! The weather turned out great, and accept for a thorough dumping as the skies opened up on Sunday morning.

Saturday brought a ton of people to the Dizzy Pig camp. We served up ribs, competition brisket and pork sandwiches and french fries seasoned with Dizzy Pig! Meanwhile, turn-ins went smoothly, and the team turned in some great boxes. Chris cooked a $250 Waygu brisket which is more than he has ever paid for a piece of meat. It came out awesome, and after turning in the box, we thought brisket was our best category turn in of the day!! Fast forward to awards…brisket was our worst score, coming in 17th place. On a normal day, that score for our brisket would have been a huge disappointment. But this day, it didn’t matter! Getting calls in all three of the other categories…1st Chicken, 7th Ribs, 2nd Pork was enough to propel Dizzy Pig to their 14th Grand Championship! Congratulations to Smokin Hoggz on a very close finish for Reserve Grand!! It was close…in fact just over 1/10th of a point separated us.

Sunday was another good day for team Dizzy in the Harpoon Summer Sizzler grilling contest! We started off the awards getting a call for Chicken Wings. 1st place with our first perfect score of 180 ever. The butterflies started rolling, and for a moment we thought we may have a chance at being one of the several teams that have won both days at Harpoon. Our 5th place in Chef’s Choice got us 176 points, and on top of the 180 for chicken, we were well under way. But our Sausage and Shrimp entries just didn’t wow the judges like we expected. When it was said and done, Dizzy Pig was 5th overall! Big congrats to Q Haven for taking it all home!! A great time was had by all up at Harpoon, and we’ll be back next year!
