Fair Harrington, DE
It was with definite anticipation that we headed across the Bay Bridgeto a brand new contest in Harrington, Delaware. While the contest was new to the circuit, the organizer is a veteran at putting on BBQ contests, and Sandy Fulton exceeded expectations! It sure isn’t often that a first time contest has more than 50 teams, but the Delaware Triple Threat topped out at 109 pro teams! Almost unheard of for a new contest, but no surprise when Sandy is involved.
Triple Threat was held at the sprawling premises of the Delaware State Fairgrounds, and the teams had just about everything they needed including a sit-down breakfast on Saturday. The power was a bit of an issue as all hookups were 30 amp, but if you were lucky enough to have an adapter, all was good! The weather turned out to be nearly perfect. We felt 2 or 3 rain drops when the front came through, but other than a little breeze, you really couldn’t ask for more weather wise.
We had a great team this weekend, rounded out with long time veterans Brian and Nicole Junkins, Susan Handy and Theresa Nester. We even had a game day appearance by longtime Dizzy team mate John “Woodoggies” Kovo! Our cook went as well as can be expected for the first contest of the year. In fact, almost nothing went noticeably wrong. In the end, we loved our chicken and ribs, and wished our pork and brisket had more moisture. The award ceremony saw Chris running to the stage to pickup his check and medal for 5th place chicken! Otherwise, we stayed put in our seats, but found out we had actually done pretty well overall with a 28th place finish…putting us on top of 81 other teams! Not the prefect way to start the year, but hopefully we can improve for Fredericksburg in May!
Congrats go out to Mike Fay from Aporkalypse Now on his Grand Championship, and to Dizzy Pig sponsored Finn’s Finest on Reserve.
