Covington, VA – June 29-30, 2012
When we heard that they were having a contest up in the mountains at the end of June, we thought “what a great way to escape the summer city heat!” Turns out, Covington would see record high temperatures of over 100 degrees! It was brutal out on the streets. Friday evening, the heavens opened up, and Covington, as well as much of the mid-Atlantic region, was pounded by an extreme straight line storm called a “Derecho”. Chris has been backpacking all over the country, and has never seen weather of this magnitude. 90 mph sustained winds roared through and wiped out the entire vending area, and took several teams cookers and equipment down the street. Luckily, nobody was hurt. The most amazing thing was though the power was knocked out to the entire area, the contest still went on. It was a testament to the resilience of these BBQ teams, as well as the judges who stayed in dark hotels to get a chance to eat our food. Dizzy Pig trooped through, and managed 10th place overall finish as we celebrated our 100th contest!! Also in their 100th contest, 3Eyz BBQ, who took home the grand championship right in the middle of a a phenomenal year.
