#4 James Riverfest, Lynchburg, Virginia - September 2003

4th place overall / 26 teams

The "other Lynchburg" as we called it turned out to be a great contest for us. We met some great new folks and the contest was very well run for a first time event. We had to improvise, as I could not get a trailer in time, and we had to get by with what we could fit in the Pathfinder, and two of our regular team mates missing. Our normal setup involves 5 or 6 big green eggs, but for this contest we had to make do with three. The pared down staff (Brett Brown from the Free Range BBQ team helped us out) and equipment shortfalls were a challenge to deal with, but the food came off the cookers especially nicely, and when the results were tallied up the Dizzy Pig team ended up with a respectable 4th place overall.

Cooking at this new contest in Lynchburg, Virginia was pretty much a last minute decision. Big Green Egg had just agreed to sponsor the Dizzy Pig Team, and we were anxious to get one more contest in for the year. Once I heard my partner, Mike, wanted to fly down from Canada, it was an easy decision. Two important team mates would not be able to make it, and I did not have access to a trailer this time. So we loaded the Pathfinder to the gills, and went with a parred down agenda, and help from friend Brett Brown, from the Free Range BBQ Team. We brought less cookers, less meat, and had less people. We were more relaxed than ever, and had the most fun yet.

And we did the best yet getting called to the stage in all 4 of the main categories! Congrats to The Boys from Tornado Alley (Donnie and Bart) who came all the way from Oklahoma, on their Grand Championship!

Well, hard to believe all this stuff was in the Pathfinder, but here we are! Mike and Brett are getting geared up!
Chris gets to work prepping chicken. ...and butts.
People had lots of questions about the Big Green Eggs, and Dizzy Pig rubs. Get spun! When allowed by the organizer, we usually sell all 8 of our rubs at contests.
Ken of Hoss's BBQ built his smoker from stainless steel dairy farm equipment. Brett crushes his nuts for the dessert contest!
Chris got to shake the Riverfest Queen's hand a few times, and get checks! Another blank spot for the last one. Not many pix for this one.
