#3 New Holland Summerfest, New Holland Pennsylvania - August 2003

17th place overall / 43 teams

While the Dizzy Pig guys are generally a humble bunch, starting off with two top ten contests can start inflating the heads of even the tamest of egos. This turned out to be the contest that made us realize it wasn't good enough to just cook good food. Not only did we need to try and improve on what we were turning into the judges, but we began seeing that there is definitely some luck involved on which table of judges your entry lands on. Overall we were still pleased to be among the top half of the teams, but our normally strong brisket and rib scores really took a big hit this day! Ouchola.

Returning to New Holland was an easy decision, as it is within reasonable travelling distance for all team members, and is a wonderfully run event in a really, really nice setting. August 22nd we left the DC area and drove to gorgeous Amish country East of Lancaster where we hooked up with Melvin Stolzfus and checked into our spot in New Holland Park. The weather was perfect, and smoke was already in the air when we arrived.

The New Holland Summerfest is growing every year, and this year 43 teams competed. Not sure what happened to our rib and brisket scores on this one, but it was pretty clear the judges were not too crazy with what we turned in!

Always a great feeling to be all set up. One spot over from last year, but a great spot under the trees. The scene in the park as other teams get going/
Once again Lee makes an appearance with the all powerful Music City Pigpals. John coaches Kenny on how he wants the prep done for the sausage box.
Mike is well rested and feeling chipper as he works on ribs. Time for Mike to apply the magic sauce to the ribs.
Chicken thighs are on the smoker and getting some nice color. John and Mike at crunch time. "You think it looks better this way?"
Chris finishin up some cooking, tryin to keep it light! For the Anything But category we did Raging River maple glazed salmon.
Top half of the pack is good enough for these fellas! Tony, John, Kenny, Mike and Chris. No last picture, so we will leave with a blank!
