Well, we finally did it and made it down to one of the oldest contests out there. The Blue Ridge BBQ Festival. "Tryon" as it's called by fellow Qers. Gorgeous scenery. Lots of golf carts. Loads and loads of great BBQ teams. The layout and "feel" of the contest reminded us of The Jack, and our results did too! We've not done well at the Jack, and we sure had our hands full down here. We were lucky to even be in the top half here, but we had a fantastic time. And make that 3 out of 4 times we have had uncomfortable weather. It sure didn't rain, but dang was it hot. Congrats to Pit Dog BBQ and Charles and B.S. Pitmeisters on there Grand and Reserve Grand awards, and to our new friends Firehouse BBQ for a strong 3rd overall finish.

Blue Ridge BBQ Festival, North Carolina State BBQ Championship

Tryon is Tryon. What can we say??

The best thing about driving South is we get to travel down I-81 through the incredible Shenandoah Valley. The scenes during the drive are ever changing.
Chris squirts some good stuff into the meat while lovin' life. Afternoon Friday and the BGEs are all ready to fire up.
With so many teams and quite a bit of real estate to travel, golf carts are very popular. No sobriety checkpoints either, so ya gotta watch out! John Bush has been working real hard to earn his full KCBS rep status, and is very happy to be on the last legs of his RAT duties.
Time to get cookin. Our new friends, Green Eggs and Ham, featuring Green Egg Dan and Green Egg Dennis are chillin in front of their rolling home/kitchen.
Fantastic place for a contest. Paths, fields, trees and fun. This was the main area where the entertainment, vendors and awards were.
Our friend Jim "Trim" Tabb took some time to chat with us while the Wood Chicks (his daughters team) worked hard with the vending. The Tryon event is Jim's brainchild dating back to his 1992 idea to create this contest involving both the best cooks and the best judges in the East. Part of the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival is a really nice crafts show.
The cooks meeting. Our team gets some chillin time. Kenny, Sandra and Andy share some beverages and stories.
We usually eat pretty well at these contests. This heavily seared and medium rare rack of lamb is ready to serve for snacks. This old fire truck was beautiful.
Tents on tents. 76 teams in action. Another angle of the teams and their sites.
More snacks. Here's a nice sirloin steak ready to slice. Dang.
The folks at Tryon kept us entertained. There was a really nice fireworks display. Or was that from our eggs?
Saturday morning. Streets are quiet as cooks get prepared for the final push to the finish line. Firehouse BBQ. These guys are real pros and nice guys too. Was great meeting them for the first time.
You won't meet many folks like Tuffy. Just a solid guy through and through, and he knows food like nobody's business. Chris does his chicken thang.
It doesn't get much hotter than this. It was a steamer. Andy cools off with a cold towel. On the way to the awards.
Out of 76 teams, only the top five were called in each category. This is the stage we never got to step on. The ride home was just as nice as the ride down. Just fabulous country.
Going over the pass in Virginia. Wow. Storybook scenery to cap off a really long weekend.
