#17 New Holland Summerfest, New Holland Pennsylvania - August 2005

4th place overall / 55 teams

For the fourth year straight we have attended this fantastic event, and the New Holland Summerfest is pencilled in for the next 10 years. I think even when, someday, we stop competing, we will still come out to New Holland. The entire crew does an incredible job at taking care of the teams, the public, and making sure everything goes smoothly. And smoothly it went.....

Well, except for when the meat inspection was done, and Chris went to get the injection juice he had prepared....then realized he had left all of the injections and sauces at home in the fridge 3 hours away!! Time for some improvising. A trip around to beg some other teams yielded some good substitutes, and even some of the same products we use. A last minute trip to the store for some other substitutes. Other teams were unbelievably generous with helping us out. Special thanks to Steve on Team Agave and Andy on Sweetgum Hollow! We were able to provide a cutting board for Tuffy....who ended up without his....so I guess it all equals out! What a great weekend, and for the first time in 4 showings, we came away with two plaques! Finally some long awaited New Holland hardware...and some food for thought.....If we would have gotten a 5th in brisket, we would have won the grand championship! (there is ALWAYS an "if")

New Holland Summerfest, Pennsylvania State BBQ Championship

Once again, Melvin and his folks at Meadow Creek Welding, and all those on the committee pulled off another contest to remember. Everywhere you looked there was smiles. The weather held out pretty good, and except for a few showers Saturday morning and early afternoon, the days were perfect.

To top of a great weekend, my nephew Kenny ended up taking the Grand Championship award for the 11-15 year old kid's Q! Good job buddy.

New Holland 2005. Enjoy the pictures. Chris.

Thursday night arrival and setup. Par for the course, Woo Doggies scores big on a beautiful brisket. Chris spends a few quality moments with the "chunk o'chest" before trimming.
Next door, Bob Trudnack of the BBQ Guru team works out his biceps on a load of meat! John and Kenny do some taste testing.
The Dizzy Pig sales team....Kara, Tricia and Jenna. Chris's nephew Kenny works on his timeline. He cooked all three categories in the Kids Q contest!
Chuck Watson, our newest team member, pumps the butts full of flavor. Among other things, the injection contains a couple tbsp of Dizzy Dust. The shady "Memorial Park" provides THE perfect venue for a BBQ contest.
Sydney and her "pop" goof around to lighten the pressure, while Kenny shakes some Raging River on his first place chicken! Kenny, who was amazingly independent, puts some love on his chicken.
And the final step for the chicken....putting the box together! A first in chicken, 4th in beef, and a 5th in chef's choice, earned Kenny his second straight year with the most overall points. Here is the proud Grand Champion who had to top 14 other teams for this award!
Friday evening is when our big cuts go on. Chris puts a Cow Lick touchup on the brisket while Kenny and Chuck prepare the XL Big Green Egg for the butts. Melvin was kind enough to let us use the golf cart to transport the small eggs back from the Kids Q area. We only hijacked it for a little while and had some fun cruising the grounds.
4:45 am is when Chris gets up, and once the ribs are going smooth, he tries to snag a little nappy poo. Saturday is a busy day, and the festival rocks while the cookers cook! ZZ and Sherri soak it all in.
Chuck is an amazingly hard worker and extremely easy to get along with. For his huge contribution in Wildwood we presented him with a bottle of 18 year old Kentucky bourbon that he generously shared. Speaking of good dudes, our good friends Kenn and Drew of Hoss's BBQ & Catering stop by to spend some social time!
A little better than the 100+ temperatures in Bel Air, the cool air was quite a treat! Max hangs out and keeps John company while he does some lettuce prep.
Chris's daughter Kara tries to dry out after a passing morning shower. John calls Chris's treatment of the chicken "almost spiritual". Here Chris puts some last minute color on the chicken before it goes in the box.
Just about turn in time!! Chris and John put the finishing touches on the chicken entry. Chuck and Chris pull off the ribs to start building the rib box.
Dang! Closing up the rib box. One more down!
Chuck catches some well deserved shuteye after the final turn in. It is becoming a tradition for Woo to get an update picture of ZZ's beard!
A long hard day. Now the loooong wait until the awards! Lots of clapping going on at the awards. Dizzy Pig was lucky enough to get three calls to the stage!
Chris and his daughter Jenna share some good quality time at the awards. Andy and his son Noah, of the Sweet Gum Hollow team, proudly display their 3rd place chicken trophy! Noah, himself, took a first place trophy for chicken in the kids Q!
Good friends Dale and Steve of Team Agave still in shock after getting the call for GRAND CHAMPION of 55 teams!! Congrats yall. After we got packed up we got to hang with the champs a little bit more. A tired but happy group after another long and successful stay in beautiful New Holland! See ya next year.
