#15 New Jersey State BBQ Championship, North Wildwood, New Jersey - July 2005

1st place overall / 29 teams GRAND CHAMPION

We had heard from other teams that the "Wildwood" contest was not only a well run contest, but one of the funnest around. So the Dizzy Pig Team decided to get our entry checks in early for the New Jersey State BBQ Championship in the charming town of Wildwood. "The Shore", as the folks from Joisey say. Well, what we had heard was true. We had the time of our lives, and in the process we cooked up some pretty good food. Complimenting our core team (Chris, Kenny and John) was Chuck Watson, an experienced egger from Medford, New Jersey. We cooked some of our best food ever, and the judges enjoyed. Congrats to Lost Nation Smoke Company (last year's champs), and the Porkitects (2001 champs) on their 2nd and third place finishes!

Wildwood New Jersey State BBQ Championship

All the teams we met were friendly, and we met most of them. The organizers, the local people, the vacationers that stoped by. All good folks. We were humbled walking around watching the teams cook. Their experience showed, and it was a joy to see all the teams with their own little systems...going to work and getting 'er done. Last thing we expected was a win against these teams, and we were honored to come home with the big one.

Hooked up, and well on the way, the team takes a break after the rain stopped in New Jerey. South Jersey has some amazing countryside. Beautiful.
It didn't take long to make some new friends. Doug, of "Ribs Within" joins us for a beverage or two. Kenny and John rub hold up one of the dry-aged beauties John brings from his local butcher. The word is out we also ccoked a Kobe Beef of America brisket!
John whipped up a killer stew/soup concoction for "camp food". It had abut 15 cloves of garlic, and was really tasty. John's special is cooking rib tips left over after trimming the spares down to St. Louis cut. Rubbed with Raging River. He is getting good at it!
Some real nice guys that call themselves "Smokey T's" had a few problems while cooking, but overcame them and kept a positive attitude. They finished well up into the top ten!! Nice work Tom and guys!! Our site at night. Almost bedtime!
Wildwood is kind of a "tight" competition, with not much room to spread out. 20x20 is IT!! Here is our eggs lined up. Ribs Within also did really well with a top ten finish, and they are a pretty new team. Great to see these guys do well. Some good folks.
Chuck provided us some of the best "help" we have ever gotten. He was on top of everything. Thanks Chuck. Chuck even cooked his special corn/chile/cheese/sour cream recipe. Dang that was good. Fresh Jersey corn and all.
With no entry fee, the public could just walk through. That was pretty cool, and amazing how many cool people we met. Sunday and it's time to cook. Chicken on the medium egg!
They really do color up nice on the egg. The pork butt looked real purty too before it got ripped apart and presented.
The whole team managed to chill out at the same time!! Our pal Rich Decker (last year's champ) is shown here with Kenny. They look great together!!
Giving the chicken some love. Waiting for the awards to be announced.
You kidding me??? Dizzy Pig is Grand Champion?? Yowza!! John pours some celebration shots after we are most of the way packed up. What a weekend.
