#12 Pork in the Park, KCBS Maryland State Championship,
Salisbury, Maryland - April 2005

1st place overall / 37 teams GRAND CHAMPION

The Dizzy Pig Team made the trek out to the Eastern shore of Maryland for the Second Annual Pork in the Park BBQ Competition in Salisbury Maryland for their first competition of the year. The contest was very well run, the local people extremely friendly, and the weather (though far from perfect) was much better than forecasted! The team had high hopes of getting some good practice in to start off the year, but had no idea what was in store. Just a few days before the contest, the organizers finally received their Governors proclamation to designate Pork in the Park as a State Championship. And the Dizzy Pig team's two first place trophies, a ninth in pork, and an 18th in brisket were just enough to squeak out the 629.714 points needed to secure their second-ever Grand Championship! Now it looks like a Royal invitation is on the way, and once again we are honored to be in the hunt for a draw to the Jack Daniels World Championships.

Pork in the Park Maryland State BBQ Championship

What a bunch of fun, and an honor to come home with some trophies and a win. Thanks to Sandy and all those at Wicomico County Tourism for making this one of the best contests we have cooked. The teams were treated very well and the event was extremely well run. What a blast. A big congrats to Midnite Smokers and their Reserve Grand Champ award, and to our friends Lunchmeat (3rd overall), War Pigs (4th overall), Cider House (5th overall) and our pals on the Free Range Team (6th overall) and the BBQ Guru (14th overall in their first contest).

One of the first things John wanted to show off was the prime dry aged brisket he gets from his Pennsylvania butcher. In great spirits, and raring to go in the first contest of the year, Kenny and John get to trimming those gorgeous hunks of beef.
We were so happy that Mike was able to come down from Canada for this one. He is a huge (no pun intended) asset to the team. Kenny and John rub up the briskets with Dizzy Pig Cow Lick.
Our site had plenty of space, and it is so nice to be on grass instead of a parking lot. John lays a heavy dose of Dizzy Dust on the butts. He has been wanting to help more with prep...and he got it!
Our good friends on the Free Range BBQ team, Brett and Hillard, cooked next to us. Maryland jumbo lump crabcakes are popular in Eastern Maryland, and we hoped to wow the judges with our Tsunami Spin crabcakes.
John and Chris prep the crabcake box. "Yo, you missed a spot!" Mike cooked up some pizza that he has been practicing on. He cooked it on the XL BGE.
He calls it "Fun Ji Pizza", and it was incredible. Once everything is cookin we had some time to relax.
Our camp at night. A pretty neat angle.
John took this cool shot of the pond and the big tent. Morning rolls around and it's time to get real serious.
The vendor tents across the water. This ended up being a fantastic venue. From 6am to 1:30pm on Saturday, the Eggs get opened a lot.
The competitors with waterfront property. Nothing like a little break before crunch time!
Our first place chicken starting to get some nice color. Rich of Lost Nation Smoke is always a tough team to beat. I think he does yoga in the morning, or something.
Mike is dressing up our first place ribs with the sauce. Dang they sure got some nice color.
Sausage was the last category, and John spearheads the whole thing. His efforts placed 12th this year. Fred and Bob of the BBQ Guru competed in their first ever competition. 14th overall and a first in sausage is fantastic! Congrats guys.
Our Grand Championship Trophy, and the looks on our faces say everything! (l-r Chris, John, Mike, Kenny.) Back at camp with all our trophies, ribbon, the egg, and the rubs we used! (l-r Kenny, John, Chris, Mike)
It is so nice when your friends get trophies. Brett of Free Range snagged a second in Pork, a third in Brisket , and a strong 6th overall!! More friends with trophies....here is the Guru guys with their 1st in Sausage!
And good friend Rich Decker snags a First in Brisket. Lunchmeat, another good team from New England got some nice awards and a 3rd place overall!! Congrats yall.
